When you work with Litchfield Research, you can expect us to be concerned about really understanding what it is you want your research to accomplish. The three elements of a research project (design, implementation and display) work together when the project is designed correctly. Designing the project correctly starts with a clear understanding of the goals. We always try to, “Begin with the end in mind.”

This orientation leads us to ask basic questions so we can understand what it is you want from the project. We had a client who wanted to research the subscribers of their magazine. They were interested in segmenting the readership into groups that advertisers could target. They wanted to ask, “Do you own this kind of equipment?” We recognized that the answer to that question would only give the client two groups; owners and non-owners. We suggested changing the question to, “What components do you have in your current system?” and adding the question, “What components do you plan to upgrade in the next 12 months?” With the answers to these questions the client got a picture of what components were in the average system, what system configuration was most likely to be upgraded, and what combination of components were in high end systems and low end systems. We displayed the data highlighting these relationships and helped the client get a much better handle on the market segments. The change in the questions did not result in an increase in the cost of the research, but it represented a great increase in the quality and the quantity of information the client received. This is an example what you can expect from Litchfield Research.
